How dog food portions are calculated
Vets start with the Resting Energy Requirement (RER), the calories a dog burns at rest, then multiply it for life stage and activity to get the daily need.
Daily calories = RER × life-stage factor
Cups per day = Daily calories ÷ calories per cup
| Life stage | Factor |
|---|---|
| Puppy under 4 months | × 3.0 |
| Puppy 4 months to adult | × 2.0 |
| Neutered adult | × 1.6 |
| Intact adult | × 1.8 |
| Senior / inactive | × 1.4 |
| Weight loss | × 1.0 (of ideal weight) |
Find "kcal/cup" in the guaranteed analysis or feeding guide on your dog food bag. Calorie density varies a lot between brands, so the same number of cups can mean very different calories.

Both are starting points. Adjust based on your dog's body condition, weighing every few weeks.
How much should I feed a puppy?
Puppies need about two to three times their resting energy. Split it into 3–4 meals for young puppies.
